Pingxi Line Half-Day Trip

Follow the railway from Shifen to Pingxi for an easygoing half day of old streets, a forest waterfall and practical local food stops.

Pingxi Line Half-Day Trip: Make this visit work

Make the return service the skeleton

Travel to Ruifang, use the travel-day Pingxi branch service toward Shifen, then decide whether to continue to Pingxi town before returning through Ruifang. Check service notices as well as the timetable: engineering or disruption can change the operating pattern. Do not use a historical timetable as a guaranteed connection from Taipei.

Two core activities are enough

Street plus waterfall suits walkers: leave the station, pass the street, use the signed pedestrian approach and allow the return walk before the park closes. Street plus Pingxi suits a railway-town day. A purchased sky lantern is optional, separate from the free waterfall park and its last-entry rules; skip it rather than sacrificing your return margin.

If you miss a train, remove a stop

Keep one later return service as a fallback, without treating it as a guaranteed transfer. If the Shifen walk or waiting has already used your buffer, return from Shifen instead of adding Pingxi. If the waterfall is closed, keep the street or move on only when the actual service fits. Never walk along the tracks to catch up.

Plan at a glance

Best for: Travelers who want a relaxed railway-and-waterfall half day.
Start point: Ruifang Station
Getting around: Use the Pingxi Line and keep the return timetable handy.
Key reminder: Trains are infrequent, so plan around the return service.
Not ideal for: Visitors who want to include Jiufen on the same day.

Before you go

Check the current Pingxi Line timetable before departure and keep a screenshot for the return trip.
Wear shoes with reliable grip; the waterfall path may be wet or uneven.
Do not stand on the railway tracks for photos, and follow staff instructions when trains approach.
Start earlier on weekends and public holidays, when Shifen is usually busiest.
